Esbjerg C - Østerby and Gammelby

The areas of Østerby and Gammelby are bordered by the Rørkjær area in the east, Jerne to the north and Veldtofte to the west.

City districts with soul

The residential areas in Østerby and Gammelby are considered neighbourhoods with soul.

Here you will find many child-friendly streets and large green areas. Both lakes in the parks Lergravs Park and Paradissøer are relics from the area’s early brickwork production, which gives the area two green oases where you can take a break from the city.

Østerby is Characterized by a blend of single-family homes from the 1920´2-1950´s as well as newer houses and small apartment blocks.

Gammelby is located along Darumvej and borders Østerby. The smaller residential area in Gammelby is comprised primarily of single-family homes, and the area is furthermore home to non-residential development, including the Måde harbour area.

Østerby and Gammelby are located in the south-eastern part of Esbjerg C and have approx. 7,800 inhabitants.

Community spirit

The border between Østerby and the surrounding neighbourhoods of Rørkjær, Jerne, and Veldtofte and Velbæk is fluent, partly due to the fact that Østerby and Gammelby share schools but also due to the large sports community, which is a centered around Østerby’s sports association IF92, Veldtofte Sports Park, Skibshøj Stadium, Rørkjær Hall and Skibshøj.

Many of the larger social activities in the area are considered as shared events for everyone in the nearby neighbourhoods, and include Sankt Hans in Lergravs Park, Østerby Day, and Christmas Festival in Jerne. In Østerby you can also find the large green space Skibshøj, which is used for concerts, circuses, and more.

Gammelby was originally a village in Jerne Parish. It was not until the 1920s that development took off in Gammelby, which today is part of Esbjerg.

Esbjerg Municipality is divided into seven school districts and a district named city of children. Children in the eastern part of Østerby and Gammelby are part of the Urban school Præstegårdsskoen in Østerby whereas children in western part of Østerby and Gammelby are part of the Urban School Rørkjærskolen in Rørkjær.

Esbjerg Municipality is divided into enrolment districts. Residents in Østerby and Gammelby are located in the district named Præstegård, but boarders the district named Midtbyen/Rørkjær.
